The 2010–2011 Harley-Davidson Touring Twin Cam 96 (FLHTK Ultra Limited) marked a significant step in the evolution of Harley-Davidson’s grand American touring motorcycles. Introduced for the 2010 model year, the FLHTK Ultra Limited was positioned as a new, top-of-the-line model, slotting above the already well-appointed Electra Glide Ultra Classic. It was designed for the most discerning long-distance riders, incorporating a suite of premium features and a more powerful engine as standard equipment, setting a new benchmark for comfort, performance, and luxury within the company’s touring family.
The introduction of the Ultra Limited was a direct response to rider demand for a factory-custom touring machine that included popular upgrades right from the showroom floor. Built on the redesigned touring chassis that debuted in 2009—featuring a single-spar, rigid backbone frame for improved handling and load-carrying capacity—the FLHTK offered a demonstrably more stable and responsive ride compared to pre-2009 models.
Distinctions from the Electra Glide Ultra Classic
While visually similar to its sibling, the Electra Glide Ultra Classic (FLHTCU), the 2010-2011 Ultra Limited was distinguished by several key upgrades that were previously available only as accessories. The most significant difference was the powertrain. While the standard Touring lineup for these years was powered by the Twin Cam 96 engine (1584cc), the Ultra Limited came equipped from the factory with the larger, more powerful Twin Cam 103 engine (1690cc). This provided a noticeable increase in torque, which was especially beneficial for a fully loaded, two-up touring motorcycle.
Beyond the engine, the FLHTK made several other premium features standard:
Brembo Brakes with ABS: While available as an option on other models, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) was standard on the Ultra Limited.
Heated Hand Grips: A crucial feature for all-weather, long-distance touring.
Smart Security System: Included a hands-free key fob for added convenience and protection.
Premium Tour-Pak Luggage Rack: An upgraded chrome rack provided both style and function.
Upgraded Seat and Passenger Backrest: Featured exclusive inserts and detailing for enhanced comfort.
Contrast Chrome 28-Spoke Cast Aluminum Wheels: A distinctive wheel design unique to the Limited model.
These additions created a comprehensive package that elevated the touring experience and justified the motorcycle’s “Limited” designation.
Powertrain and the Harley-Davidson Touring Twin Cam 96 Engine Family
The heart of the 2010-2011 touring family was the air-cooled Twin Cam engine. The standard engine for the lineup was the Twin Cam 96, which had been introduced in 2007. It featured a displacement of 96 cubic inches (1584cc) and was paired with the 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission, designed to lower engine RPM at highway speeds for a smoother, more comfortable ride.
The FLHTK Ultra Limited, however, showcased the next step in performance with the standard Twin Cam 103. This engine increased displacement to 103 cubic inches (1690cc) by utilizing a larger bore. The result was a significant boost in low-end torque, from approximately 92 ft-lb in the Twin Cam 96 to over 100 ft-lb in the 103. This made the Ultra Limited feel more responsive during acceleration, overtaking, and when climbing grades, particularly with a passenger and a full load of gear. Both engines featured Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) for reliable starting and crisp throttle response in various atmospheric conditions.
Chassis and Features
The 2010-2011 Ultra Limited benefited from the completely re-engineered touring frame introduced a year prior. This frame significantly increased torsional stiffness, which translated to more precise and confident handling, especially in corners. The chassis also featured an “Isolated Drive System” in the rear sprocket, which smoothed out power delivery and reduced noise and vibration.
Creature comforts were paramount on the Ultra Limited. The bike came standard with an 80-watt, four-speaker Harmon/Kardon advanced audio system with CD/MP3 player and CB/intercom capabilities. The full fairing, vented lower fairings, and adjustable wind deflectors provided excellent protection from the elements. Ergonomics were focused on all-day comfort, with a deep bucket seat for the rider and a luxurious, wrap-around backrest and armrests for the passenger. The total luggage capacity, between the Tour-Pak and saddlebags, was generous and designed for serious cross-country travel.
