The Ford three-row electric SUV was a cancelled battery electric crossover SUV developed by Ford Motor Company. Originally announced as part of Ford’s expansion of its electric vehicle lineup, the model was intended to become the brand’s first dedicated three-row battery-electric sport utility vehicle. The project was cancelled in August 2024 before entering production as Ford shifted its electrification strategy toward hybrid vehicles and lower-cost electric models.

Although cancelled, a fully functional prototype remained in use as a research vehicle. In 2026, Ford confirmed that the prototype continued to serve as a development platform for the company’s next generation of electric vehicles.

History

Ford announced plans for a three-row electric SUV during its early electrification strategy, with production originally expected to begin at the Oakville Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada. The vehicle formed part of the company’s plan to expand its battery-electric lineup alongside the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Ford F-150 Lightning.

The model was first seen by spy photographers in February 2023 while being transported from Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.

On 21 August 2024, Ford announced that it had cancelled the programme as part of a broader restructuring of its electric vehicle strategy. The company cited lower-than-expected consumer demand for large battery-electric SUVs, increasing pricing pressure, and the need to improve profitability. Instead, Ford announced that future three-row SUVs would be offered with hybrid powertrains while development resources would be redirected toward smaller, more affordable electric vehicles.

Ford stated that cancelling the programme would result in a non-cash impairment charge of approximately US$400 million, with additional costs potentially reaching US$1.5 billion.

Prototype

In April 2026, photographs published on social media by Ford executive Doug Field revealed that a prototype of the cancelled vehicle had continued to exist after the programme’s termination. The prototype was later identified by Ford as the cancelled three-row SUV.

According to Ford, the vehicle had been repurposed as an engineering research platform to evaluate technologies for the company’s future electric vehicles. The prototype was described as having influenced Ford’s next-generation EV architecture rather than being intended for production.

Design

Although never officially unveiled, photographs of the prototype indicated that the vehicle featured a streamlined crossover design with a low roofline, flush door handles and an aerodynamic body intended to maximise driving range.

Reports indicated that the planned production model would have offered more than 350 miles (563 km) of electric driving range. Ford was also evaluating a range-extended electric vehicle (EREV) variant using a gasoline-powered generator, with a projected combined range of approximately 550 miles (885 km).
