2015–2016 Harley-Davidson Touring Twin Cam 103 HO (FLTRXS Road Glide Special)

The 2015–2016 Harley-Davidson Touring Twin Cam 103 HO (FLTRXS Road Glide Special) marked the triumphant return of the iconic “shark-nose” fairing bagger to the company’s touring lineup. After a one-year hiatus in 2014, the Road Glide was reintroduced with significant enhancements derived from Harley-Davidson’s customer-driven Project RUSHMORE initiative. The “Special” (FLTRXS) model was positioned as a premium, factory-custom version, incorporating top-tier features, distinctive styling, and the upgraded High Output (HO) engine, making it a pivotal model in the brand’s modern history.

Development and Project RUSHMORE

The reintroduction of the Road Glide for the 2015 model year was more than a simple refresh; it was a comprehensive redesign. The brief absence allowed Harley-Davidson engineers and designers to integrate feedback gathered through Project RUSHMORE, an extensive product development program focused on improving every aspect of the rider’s experience.

Compared to the pre-2014 models, the 2015 Road Glide Special featured substantial upgrades. The most visible change was the redesigned frame-mounted fairing. While retaining its signature “shark-nose” look, it was aerodynamically optimized in a wind tunnel to reduce head buffeting. A new Triple Splitstream vent system was incorporated, allowing riders to equalize pressure between the front and back of the fairing for a smoother ride.

Further enhancements included the standard fitment of Dual Daymaker Reflector LED headlamps, which provided a significant improvement in nighttime visibility. Ergonomics were also revised, with a new handlebar position that brought the grips closer to the rider, and a redesigned seat for improved long-distance comfort. The chassis was stiffened, and the front suspension featured larger 49mm forks for more precise handling. One-touch saddlebags were also added for improved convenience.

The Harley-Davidson Touring Twin Cam 103 HO Engine

At the heart of the FLTRXS Road Glide Special is the High Output (HO) version of the air-cooled Twin Cam 103 engine. This powerplant was a key upgrade for the Project RUSHMORE touring family. To achieve the “High Output” designation, the engine was equipped with a new high-flow airbox and a unique camshaft profile. These changes were designed to enhance low-end torque and improve passing power, critical performance characteristics for a fully-loaded touring motorcycle.

The 103 cubic inch (1690cc) V-Twin delivered a robust torque output, providing strong acceleration from a standstill and effortless roll-on power at highway speeds. The engine was mated to a six-speed Cruise Drive transmission with an integrated isolated drive system, ensuring smooth power delivery and reduced vibration for the rider.

Chassis, Brakes, and Infotainment

The 2015–2016 Road Glide Special was built on Harley-Davidson’s proven touring frame. The suspension system consisted of stout 49mm front forks and a premium hand-adjustable low-profile rear suspension, allowing riders to easily set preload for a passenger or luggage without tools. The bike rode on Enforcer cast aluminum wheels, with a 19-inch wheel at the front and a 16-inch wheel at the rear.

A significant safety and performance upgrade was the standard inclusion of Reflex Linked Brakes with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). Above approximately 25 mph (40 km/h), the system electronically links the front and rear brakes to provide optimal braking force to each wheel, regardless of which brake control the rider uses. Below this speed, the front and rear brakes operate independently for better control during low-speed maneuvers.

Another hallmark of the Special model was the factory-installed Boom! Box 6.5GT infotainment system. This premium unit featured a 6.5-inch full-color touchscreen, integrated GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling and music streaming, and a 5.25-inch speaker system, setting a new standard for technology on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
