The 2007–2009 Harley-Davidson Softail Twin Cam 96B (FXSTB Night Train) was a factory custom cruiser motorcycle produced by Harley-Davidson. As a member of the Softail family, it was distinguished by its minimalist, blacked-out styling and chopper-inspired profile. The 2007 model year marked a significant update for the Night Train, introducing the larger Twin Cam 96B engine and a 6-speed transmission, which replaced the previous Twin Cam 88B (1450cc) engine and 5-speed gearbox used in the 2006 and earlier models. This powertrain upgrade provided a notable increase in torque and improved highway cruising performance.
Powertrain and Performance
The heart of the 2007-2009 FXSTB Night Train was the air-cooled Twin Cam 96B V-Twin engine. With a displacement of 96 cubic inches (1584cc), this engine offered a significant performance boost over its 88 cubic inch predecessor. The “B” in the engine’s designation signifies that it is a balanced version of the Twin Cam 96. Unlike the rubber-mounted engines found in Harley-Davidson’s Dyna and Touring lines, the Softail engine is rigidly mounted to the frame. To mitigate engine vibration, the 96B variant incorporates internal counter-balancers, providing a smoother ride for the operator.
This updated engine was paired with the 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission, which featured a new final drive ratio to take advantage of the engine’s increased torque. The addition of a sixth gear lowered engine RPM at highway speeds, reducing vibration and enhancing rider comfort on long journeys. Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) was standard, providing reliable starting and crisp throttle response across various altitudes and temperatures.
Chassis and Styling of the Twin Cam 96B FXSTB Night Train
The Night Train’s identity was defined by its aggressive, dark custom styling. It adhered to a “less is more” philosophy, featuring a stripped-down and blacked-out aesthetic. Key components such as the engine cases, oil tank, air cleaner cover, and rear fender supports were finished in a signature Wrinkle Black powder coat. This was contrasted with select chrome elements, including the staggered shorty dual exhaust pipes.
The motorcycle’s chopper-like stance was achieved through a raked-out front end, a 21-inch laced front wheel, and a wide, 200mm rear tire mounted on a slotted cast aluminum disc wheel. This combination gave the bike a low-slung, muscular profile. Ergonomics were typical of a factory chopper, with forward-mounted foot controls and a drag-style handlebar on 6-inch risers, which created an assertive riding position.
The Softail chassis, which gives the model family its name, was central to the Night Train’s appeal. The frame is designed to mimic the clean, rigid lines of a vintage “hardtail” frame, but conceals a modern suspension system. Two horizontally mounted shock absorbers are hidden beneath the transmission, providing a more comfortable ride than a true rigid frame without compromising the classic look. The 2009 model year was the final year of production for the FXSTB Night Train, making this three-year run a distinct and sought-after iteration of the model.
