2014–2016 Harley-Davidson Trike Twin Cam 103 HO (FLHTCUTG Tri Glide Ultra)

The 2014–2016 Harley-Davidson Trike Twin Cam 103 HO (FLHTCUTG Tri Glide Ultra) marks a pivotal generation for the company’s three-wheeled touring motorcycle lineup. Building on the established foundation of the Tri Glide Ultra Classic, this series introduced significant upgrades under the comprehensive “Project RUSHMORE” initiative. This customer-driven project focused on enhancing every aspect of the riding experience, from power and braking to comfort and infotainment, solidifying the Tri Glide’s position as a premium long-distance machine for riders seeking maximum stability and luxury.

The most substantial change from the pre-2014 models was the integration of a suite of technological and mechanical improvements. While the core chassis and three-wheeled architecture remained, the motorcycle was fundamentally redesigned in key areas. The predecessor model utilized the standard Twin Cam 103 engine, whereas the 2014 model debuted the more potent “High Output” version. This was complemented by the introduction of Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS, a system that dynamically distributes braking force between the front and rear wheels for improved control. Aesthetically and functionally, the iconic “batwing” fairing was redesigned with a new slipstream vent to drastically reduce rider head buffeting. Furthermore, the infotainment system received a complete overhaul, replacing the older radio with the modern Boom!™ Box full-color screen system, and lighting was upgraded to brilliant Daymaker™ LED headlamps.

Project RUSHMORE and the Harley-Davidson Trike Twin Cam 103 HO

Project RUSHMORE was a company-wide development program that directly incorporated rider feedback into the design of Harley-Davidson’s touring motorcycles. The 2014–2016 Tri Glide Ultra was a prime beneficiary of these advancements, transforming it into a more capable and rider-friendly machine.

Engine and Drivetrain: At the heart of the upgrade was the new air-cooled, High Output (HO) Twin Cam 103 engine. Displacing 103 cubic inches (1690cc), this revised V-Twin featured a new camshaft and a high-flow airbox designed to increase low-end torque. This enhancement provided stronger acceleration, particularly noticeable when carrying a passenger and luggage, and improved roll-on power for highway passing. The engine was paired with the 6-Speed Cruise Drive® transmission and included an electric reverse, a crucial feature for maneuvering the substantial trike in parking situations.

Braking and Control: A major safety enhancement was the implementation of the Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS. At speeds above 25 mph (40 km/h), the system hydraulically links the front and rear brakes. Applying either the hand lever or the foot pedal will dynamically apply braking pressure to both the front and rear wheels, optimizing balance and reducing stopping distances. The system operates independently at lower speeds to facilitate tight-space maneuvering.

Comfort and Aerodynamics: The redesigned batwing fairing featured a pressure-equalizing vent just below the windscreen. This “slipstream” vent, which can be opened or closed by the rider, smooths the airflow and significantly reduces head buffeting, a common issue on long rides. Rider and passenger ergonomics were also improved with a wider, deeper seat and revised back and arm rests for the passenger.

Infotainment and Features: This era saw the departure of the old Harmon/Kardon radio in favor of the advanced Boom!™ Box 4.3 or optional 6.5GT infotainment systems. These units featured a full-color display, Bluetooth connectivity, voice recognition, and integrated GPS navigation on the 6.5GT model. The hand controls were redesigned to be more ergonomic and intuitive for navigating the new system’s features.

Chassis and Handling

The Tri Glide Ultra is built on a frame designed specifically for the dynamics of a three-wheeled vehicle. It provides the necessary rigidity to handle the forces unique to a trike, which is steered rather than counter-steered like a traditional motorcycle. To manage the steering inputs, the front end is equipped with a steering damper that minimizes feedback and enhances stability at all speeds.

The suspension consists of robust 49mm telescopic front forks and a rear setup with air-adjustable shock absorbers. This allows the rider to tune the suspension’s preload with an air pump, adapting the ride comfort and handling characteristics to accommodate the weight of a passenger and cargo. The integrated trunk offers 4.3 cubic feet of weather-proof storage, which is complemented by the Tour-Pak luggage carrier mounted on top, bringing the total cargo capacity to 6.7 cubic feet.
