The 2016–2017 Harley-Davidson Softail Slim S (FLSS) is a cruiser motorcycle produced by Harley-Davidson. As part of the “S Series,” it was a limited-production model that blended the minimalist, post-war “bobber” aesthetic of the standard Softail Slim with the high-performance Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110B engine, which was previously exclusive to the company’s premium CVO (Custom Vehicle Operations) models. The FLSS was offered for two model years and represented a significant step-up in power and styling, positioning it as a top-tier offering within the Softail family before the entire platform was redesigned in 2018.
Development and Model Differences
The introduction of the S Series, which also included the Fat Boy S, was a strategic move by Harley-Davidson to offer CVO-level powertrain performance in a more accessible, factory-produced package. The primary distinction between the standard Softail Slim (FLS) and the Softail Slim S (FLSS) was the engine.
Engine: The standard model was equipped with the air-cooled High Output Twin Cam 103B engine (103 cubic inches / 1690cc). The FLSS received the Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110B (110 cubic inches / 1801cc), a counter-balanced V-twin that delivered a substantial increase in torque and overall performance. This engine was paired with a high-flow ventilator intake and a blacked-out dual shotgun exhaust system.
Styling and Finishes: The Slim S featured a distinct dark custom and military-inspired theme. Unlike the chrome-heavy standard model, nearly every component on the FLSS was finished in gloss, satin, or denim black. This included the front end, triple clamps, fork sliders, handlebar clamp, headlamp trim ring, and exhaust. The model was available in two color schemes: a classic Vivid Black and a signature Olive Gold Denim, which featured a prominent military-style star graphic on the fuel tank.
* Standard Features: The Slim S came equipped with several features that were optional on the standard model. Electronic cruise control and an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) were included as standard equipment, enhancing both its touring capability and safety profile.
Design and Features of the Harley-Davidson Softail Slim S
The Softail Slim S adhered to the classic bobber design principles, characterized by a stripped-down, minimalist appearance. Key styling elements included a narrow rear end, a chopped rear fender, a solo saddle, and a “Hollywood” handlebar with a cross-brace. The “Softail” chassis cleverly conceals the rear shock absorbers horizontally beneath the transmission, providing the clean, rigid-frame look of a vintage “hardtail” while offering modern suspension comfort.
The heart of the motorcycle is its Screamin’ Eagle engine. The Twin Cam 110B is an air-cooled, 45-degree V-twin featuring internal counter-balancers (designated by the “B”) to reduce primary vibration, allowing the engine to be rigidly mounted in the frame. This setup provides a more direct connection between the rider and the powertrain. The engine was tuned for strong low-end torque, delivering the signature Harley-Davidson power delivery and exhaust note that is highly valued by brand enthusiasts.
The ergonomics of the FLSS are defined by its low-slung profile. A laden seat height of just 23.8 inches makes the bike accessible to a wide range of riders, providing a confident, feet-down stance at stops. The chassis, combined with the bike’s weight and low center of gravity, results in stable and predictable handling, particularly well-suited for cruising on city streets and open highways.
