2022–2022 Harley-Davidson Softail Milwaukee-Eight 117 (FXLRST El Diablo)

The Harley-Davidson Softail Milwaukee-Eight 117 engine powers one of the most distinctive models in the company’s recent history, the 2022 Low Rider El Diablo (FXLRST). This limited-edition motorcycle was released as the second offering in the Harley-Davidson Icons Collection, a series of special models that celebrate signature designs and Americana. The El Diablo builds upon the popular Low Rider ST platform, infusing it with a hand-applied custom paint scheme and a premium audio system, paying homage to the iconic 1983 Harley-Davidson FXRT Sport Glide and the vibrant West Coast custom scene it inspired.

Limited to a serialized production run of just 1,500 units worldwide, the El Diablo’s most striking feature is its intricate paintwork. Applied by the renowned artisans at Gunslinger Custom Paint in Golden, Colorado, the finish is a multi-layered masterpiece. The process begins with a base of El Diablo Bright Red, followed by a second layer of Bright Red Sunglo. Intricate pinstripes of El Diablo Dark Red and Dark Red Pearl are carefully masked off before a fade effect is applied around the panel shapes to add depth. The final touch is a layer of El Diablo Dark Red Metallic that surrounds the Bright Red, creating a “candy” effect. This meticulous, hand-applied process ensures that each motorcycle is a unique piece of rolling art.

Powertrain and the Harley-Davidson Softail Milwaukee-Eight 117

At the heart of the El Diablo is the most powerful factory-installed powertrain available for the Softail chassis: the Milwaukee-Eight 117 V-Twin. This high-performance engine boasts a displacement of 117 cubic inches (1,923cc) and is engineered for the discerning rider seeking maximum torque and horsepower.

Key features of this powertrain include a high-performance camshaft and a forward-facing Heavy Breather intake, which maximizes air flow to the engine. This combination, paired with a high-performance 2-into-2 offset shotgun exhaust, is tuned to deliver robust low- and mid-range torque, producing a claimed 125 ft-lb at 3500 RPM. This setup provides strong acceleration from a standing start and ample power for mid-range passing. The engine is counter-balanced to reduce vibration at idle, enhancing rider comfort without completely eliminating the classic Harley-Davidson feel.

Chassis, Handling, and Key Features

The El Diablo is built on the Harley-Davidson Softail chassis, which is prized for its modern performance and classic hardtail lines. The motorcycle’s handling characteristics are largely defined by its taller monoshock rear suspension, which raises the rear of the bike compared to a standard Low Rider S. This adjustment, combined with a 43mm inverted front fork, provides increased suspension travel and a greater lean angle (31.3 degrees), allowing for more aggressive cornering.

The frame-mounted fairing is directly inspired by the classic FXRT Sport Glide fairing, offering significant wind protection for long-distance comfort without putting weight on the handlebars. Ergonomics are tailored for an assertive riding position, featuring high handlebars mounted on pullback risers and a deep solo seat that helps keep the rider securely in place during acceleration.

The primary difference between the standard Low Rider ST and the El Diablo, beyond the exclusive paint, is the inclusion of a factory-installed, high-performance audio system. Developed jointly by Harley-Davidson and Rockford Fosgate, this system is engineered specifically for the motorcycle environment. It features a powerful amplifier, two 5.25-inch woofers, and two remote tweeters, all integrated seamlessly into the fairing. The system utilizes Bluetooth connectivity, allowing riders to stream audio directly from a mobile device.
