The 2027 Honda CRF450R marks a comprehensive engineering redesign by Honda Racing Corporation (HRC), transitioning from incremental updates to a complete platform overhaul. Developed using data from world championship MXGP competition, the updated flagship motocross motorcycle focuses on three primary engineering targets: increased power output, significant mass reduction, and enhanced handling precision.

1. Powertrain and Drivetrain Engineering

The 2027 CRF450R features the most extensive engine redesign in over a decade. The physical architecture of the powerplant has been reduced in width by 17 mm, yielding a 2.7 kg mass reduction. Despite the smaller footprint, peak power output has increased by 10.3%, and torque output has risen by 3.7% across the entire RPM range.

  • Transmission: The transmission shaft length was reduced by 14 mm, saving 509 grams via the integration of split resin cage needle bearings. The final drive sprocket was increased by two teeth to a 51-tooth configuration for more immediate rear-wheel thrust.

  • Back Torque Limiter (BTL): A world-first for production motocross, Honda introduced a rubber-damper-based Back Torque Limiter. Validated by HRC in MXGP racing, this specialized slipper clutch system reduces clutch lever pull effort and mitigates rear-wheel kickback during aggressive deceleration.

2. Chassis and Geometry Refinements

The unladen dry weight (excluding fuel) of the CRF450R has been reduced to 102.7 kg (108 kg kerb weight), representing a total weight reduction of 4.5 kg. This weight reduction centers around an aluminum twin-spar frame that is 70% redesigned.

Structural Rigidity and Swingarm

  • Head Pipe Architecture: The steering head pipe assembly utilizes cast gussets instead of the previous forged design, increasing longitudinal and torsional rigidity by 10% without adding mass.

  • Front Fork: The Showa 49 mm USD front fork incorporates a Dynamic Blow System (DBS) piston, which optimizes compression damping at ultra-low to low stroke velocities. The outer tubes and sub-tanks feature a friction-reducing Kashima coating.

  • Rear Suspension: The Pro-Link rear linkage ratio was revised and fitted with thrust needle bearings to improve smoothness during corner exits.

The left handlebar hosts a revised suite of HRC-developed electronic rider aids that interface directly with the PGM-FI system:
