The 2011–2019 Harley-Davidson Sportster Evolution 883 (XL883L SuperLow) is a cruiser motorcycle from the Sportster line, produced by the American manufacturer Harley-Davidson. Introduced in 2011, the SuperLow was designed to be one of the most accessible models in the Harley-Davidson lineup, specifically targeting new riders, shorter riders, and those seeking a comfortable, confidence-inspiring riding experience. It replaced the previous XL883L “Low” model, bringing significant updates to the chassis and ergonomics to further enhance its user-friendly characteristics.
The SuperLow was built on the long-standing Sportster platform, which dates back to 1957, and featured the iconic air-cooled Evolution V-twin engine. Its development was a direct response to customer feedback requesting a motorcycle with a lower seat height, easier handling at low speeds, and improved comfort for long-distance cruising.
Development and Design
The primary design goal of the XL883L SuperLow was to create a motorcycle with superior handling dynamics and ergonomics compared to its predecessor, the Sportster 883 Low. While the previous model also featured a reduced seat height, the SuperLow took this concept further by redesigning key chassis components.
The most significant changes were centered around the suspension, wheel sizes, and rider triangle (the relationship between the seat, handlebars, and footpegs). Harley-Davidson engineers equipped the SuperLow with new radial tires from Michelin Scorcher mounted on redesigned cast aluminum wheels—an 18-inch front and a 17-inch rear. This combination, along with revised front-end geometry, was intended to provide lighter steering and more responsive handling.
The suspension was also recalibrated for a more compliant ride. While maintaining a very low laden seat height of just 25.5 inches, the engineers worked to increase usable rear suspension travel compared to other lowered Sportster models, aiming to prevent the harsh bottoming-out often associated with low-slung cruisers. The result was a motorcycle that felt more planted and stable, particularly in corners and at cruising speeds. The 4.5-gallon “walnut” style fuel tank provided extended range, reinforcing its capability for longer journeys.
Key Features of the XL883L SuperLow
The SuperLow was distinguished by a combination of features aimed at rider comfort and accessibility. The deep, solo bucket seat was designed to position the rider securely “in” the motorcycle rather than “on” it. Mid-mount foot controls and a pullback handlebar created a relaxed, upright riding position that reduced strain on the arms and back.
Engine and Powertrain
At the heart of the SuperLow is the air-cooled 883cc Evolution V-Twin engine, a powertrain known for its durability and characteristic torque delivery. The engine is rubber-mounted to the frame to isolate the rider from vibrations, a feature that became standard on Sportsters in 2004. It utilized Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) for reliable starting and smooth throttle response across the RPM range. The engine was paired with a five-speed transmission and delivered power to the rear wheel via a clean, low-maintenance belt drive system.
Chassis and Handling
The chassis of the SuperLow was its defining element. The combination of its low center of gravity, revised steering geometry, and specific wheel-and-tire package contributed to its reputation as one of the best-handling bikes in the Sportster family. While its low ground clearance of 3.8 inches limited its lean angle in aggressive cornering, the bike excelled in urban environments and on open highways, where its stability and easy maneuverability were most appreciated. Starting in 2014, the SuperLow received an upgraded braking system, including larger front brake rotors and more rigid calipers, with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) offered as a factory-installed option.
Differences from Previous and Concurrent Models
The XL883L SuperLow was a distinct evolution from the 2005-2010 XL883L Sportster 883 Low. The older model used 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels, whereas the SuperLow’s 18/17-inch setup and radial tires were key to its improved handling. Furthermore, the SuperLow’s suspension was tuned for a better balance of comfort and control.
Compared to its contemporary, the XL883N Iron 883, the SuperLow offered a different riding experience. The Iron 883 featured a more aggressive, “bobber” style with a lower-profile seat, forward-leaning riding position, and blacked-out finishes. In contrast, the SuperLow prioritized comfort and ease of use with its upright ergonomics, more plush seat, and larger fuel tank, making it better suited for commuting and light touring.
