The 2020–2021 Harley-Davidson Softail Milwaukee-Eight 114 (FXLRS Low Rider S) is a factory-custom cruiser motorcycle that marked a significant evolution for one of Harley-Davidson’s most performance-oriented nameplates. Reintroduced on the then-new Softail chassis, the Low Rider S combined aggressive, West Coast-inspired styling with the formidable power of the Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-twin engine. This model was designed to appeal to riders seeking a blend of classic Harley-Davidson presence and modern handling dynamics, setting a new benchmark for the power cruiser category within the company’s lineup.
The most substantial change from its predecessor, the 2016–2017 Dyna Low Rider S, was the move to the redesigned Softail platform. The older Dyna frame, known for its twin external rear shock absorbers, was replaced by the stiffer and lighter Softail chassis, which features a hidden rear monoshock. This fundamental architectural shift provided a more rigid structure, leading to significantly improved handling and responsiveness. The engine mounting also changed; while the Dyna used a rubber-mounted Twin Cam 110 engine to isolate vibrations, the new Softail Low Rider S featured a rigidly mounted, internally counter-balanced Milwaukee-Eight 114, offering a more direct and connected feel between the rider and the powertrain.
Design and Development
The design ethos of the 2020-2021 Low Rider S was heavily influenced by the “club style” custom bike scene. This is evident in its blacked-out aesthetic, which eschews chrome for a more menacing look across the engine, exhaust, and other components. Key styling cues include a frame-mounted mini-fairing to deflect wind at higher speeds, a tall motocross-style handlebar mounted on straight risers for a commanding riding posture, and a deep solo seat that cradles the rider.
The motorcycle’s stance is aggressive and purposeful. The front end features a steeper rake angle of 28 degrees compared to the standard Low Rider, contributing to quicker, more nimble steering. This focus on performance is further underscored by the use of premium suspension components, including inverted front forks, which provide superior damping and resistance to flex under hard braking compared to conventional forks.
Key Features of the Harley-Davidson Softail Low Rider S
At the heart of the bike is the Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine, a 1,868cc, 45-degree V-twin known for its immense low-end torque. This engine delivers power smoothly and authoritatively across the rev range, making the Low Rider S exceptionally quick off the line and capable of effortless highway cruising. The engine’s rigid mounting within the Softail frame enhances chassis stiffness, allowing the rider to feel more connected to the machine and the road.
The handling characteristics are a defining feature. The combination of the rigid Softail frame, premium 43mm inverted front forks, and an easily adjustable rear monoshock gives the Low Rider S a level of cornering capability not typically associated with traditional cruisers. Braking is equally impressive, with dual front disc brakes equipped with four-piston calipers and standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) providing strong, reliable stopping power. The motorcycle rolls on distinctive matte bronze “Radiate” cast-aluminum wheels, adding a unique visual accent to its dark profile.
Ergonomically, the Low Rider S places the rider in an assertive, upright position. The combination of mid-mount foot controls and the high-rise handlebar encourages active riding and provides excellent leverage for maneuvering the bike through turns. While comfortable for solo rides, the stock configuration emphasizes a minimalist, performance-first approach, with passenger accommodations available as an accessory.
