The 2023–2024 Harley-Davidson CVO Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 (FLTRXSE Road Glide) represents a significant evolution in the brand’s Grand American Touring lineup. As the pinnacle of factory-custom motorcycles, the Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) models showcase Harley-Davidson’s latest advancements in performance, technology, and design. The 2023 model year marked a comprehensive redesign for the CVO Road Glide and its sibling, the CVO Street Glide, introducing the most powerful stock engine ever installed in a Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle, along with a host of aerodynamic, chassis, and technological upgrades.
A New Era: Differences from the Previous Model
The 2023 CVO Road Glide is a ground-up redesign, setting it distinctly apart from its predecessor. The most substantial upgrade is the transition from the Milwaukee-Eight 117 engine to the new Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121. This new powertrain introduces Variable Valve Timing (VVT) to a Harley-Davidson touring bike for the first time, resulting in a broader powerband, increased torque, improved fuel efficiency, and a smoother riding experience.
Aesthetically, the motorcycle is immediately recognizable by its completely reimagined “sharknose” fairing. Developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel testing, the new fairing features a striking integrated LED headlamp and a “floating” windscreen design. This modern approach is engineered to significantly reduce wind buffeting and improve rider comfort on long journeys.
Further enhancements include a completely new suspension system. The front now features 47mm Showa inverted forks, a significant upgrade from the previous conventional forks, providing improved handling and stability. The rear suspension consists of new dual Showa shocks with 50% more suspension travel, enhancing comfort and road-holding capability. Finally, the rider experience is modernized with the introduction of the Skyline™ OS infotainment system, which features a massive 12.3-inch TFT color touchscreen, replacing the older Boom! Box GTS system.
Key Features and Technology
The Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 Engine
At the heart of the CVO Road Glide is the Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 engine. This 121-cubic-inch (1,977cc) V-Twin is a marvel of engineering, incorporating several new technologies for the brand. The key innovation is Variable Valve Timing, which continuously adjusts the timing of the camshafts to optimize performance across the entire RPM range. This system enhances low-end torque for quick acceleration while also boosting high-RPM horsepower for highway passing power.
The engine also features a new cooling system with liquid-cooled cylinder heads that strategically target the hottest areas around the exhaust valves. This improves thermal comfort for the rider, especially in slow-moving traffic, and allows the engine to maintain peak performance under various conditions by enabling a higher compression ratio of 11.4:1.
Redesigned Chassis and Suspension of the CVO FLTRXSE Road Glide
The motorcycle’s handling dynamics have been transformed with a new chassis and premium suspension components. The 47mm Showa inverted front forks offer superior rigidity and damping control compared to the previous generation, contributing to a more precise and confidence-inspiring ride. The rear suspension features dual outboard emulsion shocks, also by Showa, which now provide 3 inches of travel. This increased travel significantly improves bump absorption and overall ride quality.
Braking performance is equally impressive, with dual front disc brakes featuring radially mounted four-piston Brembo calipers. This top-tier braking system provides exceptional stopping power and feel, enhanced by the standard Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS).
Advanced Aerodynamics and Styling
The visual identity of the 2023-2024 CVO Road Glide is defined by its new bodywork. The redesigned fairing, with its distinctive single LED headlamp and integrated amber LED turn signals, creates an aggressive and modern profile. The shape was meticulously crafted to manage airflow around the rider, creating a more comfortable “bubble” of still air. The fuel tank has been restyled with a sleeker, more angular look, and the new saddlebags are integrated seamlessly into the motorcycle’s overall design, offering ample storage without compromising aesthetics.
Infotainment and Rider Aids
The CVO Road Glide is equipped with a comprehensive suite of electronic rider aids and a state-of-the-art infotainment system. The new 12.3-inch full-color TFT display is powered by Skyline™ OS and offers three unique display options, navigation, and seamless integration with Apple CarPlay. Audio is delivered through a premium Rockford Fosgate® Stage II four-speaker system.
Riders can tailor the bike’s performance characteristics using selectable Ride Modes: Road, Sport, Rain, and two customizable modes. These modes electronically adjust power delivery, engine braking, C-ABS, and Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS) settings to suit the rider’s preference and riding conditions.
