2016–2017 Harley-Davidson Dyna Twin Cam 110 (FXDLS Low Rider S)

The 2016–2017 Harley-Davidson Dyna Twin Cam 110 (FXDLS Low Rider S) is a factory custom cruiser motorcycle produced by Harley-Davidson. Launched as a limited-production model, it represented the pinnacle of performance for the Dyna platform, combining dark, aggressive styling with the largest engine ever factory-installed in a Dyna model. The FXDLS quickly garnered a cult following and is considered by many enthusiasts to be the final and most potent iteration of the Dyna line before its discontinuation after the 2017 model year.

The Low Rider S was a significant departure from the standard Harley-Davidson Low Rider (FXDL) of the same period. While the standard model featured the Twin Cam 103 engine, extensive chrome finishes, and more traditional cruiser ergonomics, the FXDLS was built with a clear focus on performance and a minimalist aesthetic. It swapped chrome for black finishes across the powertrain, exhaust, and chassis components. Ergonomically, it adopted a more aggressive, upright riding position with mid-mount controls and a flat drag bar on tall risers, drawing inspiration from the Southern California “club style” custom bike scene.

Design and Styling

The aesthetic of the FXDLS Low Rider S is defined by its “blacked-out” treatment. Harley-Davidson applied a gloss black finish to the majority of the bike, with Wrinkle Black detailing on the engine cases, console, and other key components. The only notable exceptions to the dark theme were the striking Magnum Gold split 5-spoke cast aluminum wheels, a subtle nod to the magnesium wheels used on 1960s-era race cars.

The motorcycle was stripped of non-essential elements to emphasize its performance-oriented nature. It featured a solo seat, a minimalist speed screen fairing, and a redesigned console on the fuel tank. Standard equipment included electronic cruise control and ABS, features that underscored its positioning as a premium model within the Dyna family.

The FXDLS Low Rider S and the Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110

At the heart of the FXDLS is the Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110 engine, an air-cooled, 1801 cc V-Twin powerhouse. This marked the first time a non-CVO (Custom Vehicle Operations) production model was equipped with Harley-Davidson’s largest-displacement engine. To maximize airflow and performance, the engine was fitted with a forward-facing Screamin’ Eagle Heavy Breather performance air intake and was paired with a blacked-out 2-into-2 “Tommy Gun” style exhaust system. This combination produced a claimed 115 ft-lb of torque at 3500 RPM, providing strong acceleration and roll-on power. The powertrain was completed with a six-speed Cruise Drive transmission, delivering power to the rear wheel via a carbon-fiber-reinforced belt.

Chassis and Suspension

The FXDLS utilized the standard Harley-Davidson Dyna frame, known for its twin external rear shock absorbers. However, the suspension components were significantly upgraded to handle the increased power and improve handling dynamics. The motorcycle was equipped with Harley-Davidson’s “Premium Ride” suspension package, which included nitrogen gas-charged emulsion-type rear shocks and a single-cartridge front fork. This setup provided improved damping control and resistance to bottoming out compared to the suspension on other Dyna models.

Braking performance was also enhanced, with dual floating rotors on the front wheel. Anti-lock Brakes (ABS) were included as standard equipment, further contributing to rider control and safety.

Legacy

The production run of the FXDLS Low Rider S was limited to just two model years, 2016 and 2017. Its existence was cut short when Harley-Davidson retired the entire Dyna platform in favor of a redesigned, unified Softail frame for the 2018 model year. This decision made the Low Rider S the last and most powerful performance Dyna ever produced by the factory. As a result, it has become a highly sought-after model on the used market, appreciated for its unique blend of factory-backed performance, distinctive style, and its status as the final chapter for a beloved Harley-Davidson platform.
