The 2024 Harley-Davidson Softail Milwaukee-Eight 114 (FLI Hydra-Glide Revival) is a limited-edition motorcycle released as part of the manufacturer’s Icons Motorcycle Collection. This model serves as a tribute to a pivotal moment in Harley-Davidson’s history, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the Hydra-Glide telescopic front fork in 1949. Limited to a global production of just 1,750 individually serialized units, the bike merges nostalgic post-war styling with the contemporary performance and reliability of the modern Softail platform.
While a unique model, the Hydra-Glide Revival is built upon the established Harley-Davidson Softail chassis. The primary difference from other models in the Softail lineup, such as the Heritage Classic or the Fat Boy, lies in its highly specific, period-correct styling package. Unlike its predecessors from the 1940s and 50s, which featured a rigid “hardtail” frame, the 2024 revival utilizes the modern Softail frame’s hidden rear monoshock suspension. This design cleverly mimics the clean, unbroken lines of the original hardtail while providing a vastly superior and more comfortable ride. The powertrain is the modern Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine, a significant upgrade in power, smoothness, and reliability compared to the Panhead engines that powered the original Hydra-Glides.
Design and Styling of the Hydra-Glide Revival
The aesthetic of the 2024 Harley-Davidson Softail Milwaukee-Eight 114 (FLI Hydra-Glide Revival) is a direct homage to the classic models of the 1950s. Every element is curated to evoke a sense of nostalgia while being executed with modern manufacturing quality. The motorcycle is finished in a custom two-tone paint scheme of Redline Red and Birch White, a combination inspired by models from 1956. The fuel tank is adorned with period-correct “Harley-Davidson V” badges, distinct from the branding used on contemporary models.
Furthering the classic theme is a large, detachable two-tone windshield, with the lower portion color-matched in Redline Red. The rider sits on a solo saddle, trimmed with a decorative fringed leather valance, white seam piping, and a chrome grab rail, reminiscent of accessories from the era. The motorcycle is equipped with sealed, water-resistant leather and vinyl saddlebags, which are detailed with chrome conchos, acrylic studs, and leather fringe. Completing the vintage look are chrome steel-laced wheels and full-skirted “Hollywood” handlebars. To certify its place as a collector’s item, each bike features a “Hydra-Glide Revival” insert on the handlebar riser cap and a serialized “Icons Motorcycle Collection” graphic on the rear fender.
Chassis and Performance
Beneath its vintage-inspired exterior, the Hydra-Glide Revival is a thoroughly modern machine. The heart of the motorcycle is the Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-Twin engine. This air- and oil-cooled, 1868cc powerhouse is known for its significant low-end torque, providing strong acceleration and a satisfying exhaust note. The engine is mated to a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission, ensuring smooth power delivery across all speeds. For enhanced long-distance comfort, electronic cruise control comes as a standard feature.
The Softail chassis is engineered to provide responsive handling and a comfortable ride. The concealed coil-over monoshock rear suspension is adjustable for preload, allowing riders to fine-tune the handling for their weight or for carrying luggage. The front suspension, while celebrating the original telescopic fork, features modern internals for improved damping and control. Braking is handled by a modern system equipped with standard Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) for added safety and confidence. The combination of this advanced chassis and powerful engine ensures that the Hydra-Glide Revival performs with the capability and predictability expected of a contemporary premium cruiser.
